Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a black representation of the South Gate of the ancient walled city of Suwon, Korea above two gold battle-axes in saltire surmounted by a brick red annulet. All above a black scroll bearing the inscription "LIFELINE TO FRONTLINE" in gold letters.

Symbolism
Brick red and golden yellow are the colors used for Transportation. The organization's service in Korea is symbolized by the Korean South Gate and their service during World War II in Italy is represented by the two battle-axes taken from the Roman Fasces. The annulet symbolizes movement, the basic mission of the Battalion.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 1 February 1968.

Service in Italy during World War II is represented by battle-axes suggested by the Roman fasces. The wings allude to the unit's capability to provide intermediate level maintenance and supply support, staff and cargo air transportation, and to operate an Army airfield.

The coat of arms was approved on 16 February 1979. It was amended to add the motto on 13 April 1979.
